LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas baseball will host this year's edition of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State at Hoglund Ballpark over the weekend. Both teams are in the top five of the Big 12 standings with five conference weekends to go in the regular season.
Â
"At this point in the year in the Big 12 it becomes really competitive weekends," head coach
Dan Fitzgerald said. "Then, you throw in the fact that both teams have played well. It's fun. It's certainly good for baseball in the state of Kansas. To have rivalries is a really important thing in college sports. I think our guys are excited. The crowds here have been incredible and we're looking forward to a really fun weekend."
Â
Kansas (28-10, 9-6 Big 12) got back in the win column on Tuesday night with an 18-12 victory against Wichita State. The Jayhawks had been on a season-long nine-game winning streak before suffering a four-game losing skid last week. The 9-6 mark in Big 12 play is the best for Kansas since the 2013 season.
Â
On April 13, Kansas broke the single-season home run record. The Jayhawks have hit 78 home runs this season and lead the Big 12 (sixth nationally) in homers this year. KU has hit a home run in 15 of the last 16 games.
Â
In addition to home runs, Kansas has also played well in several other statistical categories. The Jayhawks lead the Big 12 in walks (third nationally), runs (10th nationally), slugging percentage (12th nationally), on-base percentage and total bases. Kansas is also 19th nationally in runs per game and 21st in the country hits.
Â
Kansas State (23-14, 10-5 Big 12) is currently tied for third in the Big 12 standings and was in first place only two weeks ago. The Wildcats beat UCF two out of three games last weekend but dropped two midweek games at Northeastern. Maximus Martin has led the way offensively for Kansas State this season with a .333 batting average, 12 home runs and 40 RBIs.
Â
COMING TO THE GAME
For a smoother entry into Hoglund Ballpark and to skip potential lines, fans are encouraged to show up early. With large crowds expected this weekend, a new standing room only area has been created down the left field line. Fans are asked to stay within their ticketed sections (reserved chairbacks, general admission, standing room only) to maximize attendance.
Â
Students will still receive a general admission ticket to Section A for free with a valid KU student ID on a first-come, first-served basis. Students looking to guarantee their entry into Hoglund Ballpark are advised to arrive early.
Â
Gates at Hoglund Ballpark will open two hours prior to first pitch each day.
Â
EASTER SUNDAY
Following Sunday's game, be sure to stick around for an Easter Egg Hunt on the field. There will be plenty of eggs filled with surprises, making it a memorable event for the whole family.
Â
HOW TO FOLLOW ALONG
All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+, with
Brian Hanni (play-by-play) and Kevin Wheeler (analyst) on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on KLWN (101.7 FM/1320 AM) and the Jayhawk Sports Network on KUAthletics.com and the Kansas Jayhawks app.
