WACO, Texas - Kansas women's tennis fought to a 4-2 win over TCU in the second round of the Big 12 Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas on Thursday, advancing to the Big 12 Quarterfinals.
With the win, Jayhawks will take on No. 1 seeded Texas Tech on Friday at 9 a.m. in the Big 12 Conference Quarterfinals. No. 39 Kansas improves to 14-10 overall, while No. 45 TCU falls to 13-11 this season.
The Jayhawks started off the match strong by taking the doubles point over the Horned Frogs. Court one featured a ranked matchup, as Kansas' No. 34 Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse van Vuuren defeated TCU's No. 24 Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual, 6-3. Kansas secured the doubles point on court three, as Kyoka Kubo and Anna Putilina picked up the 6-2 win over Maya Drozd and Yu-Chin Tsai.
The match on court two went unfinished, as TCU's Raquel Caballero and Tomi Main were leading Kansas' Jasmine Adams and Yerkezhan Arystanbekova in a close 5-4 match.
TCU responded quickly in singles action, as the Horned Frogs took the first two matches. On court two, TCU's Caballero defeated Kansas' Maria Titova in two sets, 6-1, 6-3. On court five, Adams fell to Pascual in a 3-6, 4-6 match to give TCU a 2-1 advantage.
Kansas quickly took the momentum back, winning three straight matches to clinch the win over TCU. On court one, No. 116 Mulville defeated Otway 7-6(4), 6-2. In No. 3 singles, Kubo picked up the win in a two set match over Tsai, 6-4, 7-6(4). Kansas clinched the match on court four, as van Vuuren defeated Main in a three set match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
The match on court six went unfinished, as Putilina battled against Drozd in a close 6-4, 5-6 match.
