SALT LAKE CITY – Dominic Voegele shined Friday night tossing a career-high 8.2 scoreless innings and helping No. 23 Kansas extend its win streak to six games with a 2-0 win against Utah at Smith's Ballpark. Kansas has a shutout in back-to-back games for the second time this season.
Â
Voegele scattered six hits across his 8.2 innings and recorded five strikeouts without allowing a walk. He retired 12 consecutive batters from the final out of the fifth inning all the way through the first two outs of the ninth inning. His electric stuff kept Utah hitters off balance all night.
Â
The first six innings of the game were scoreless for both sides.
Michael Brooks broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh inning.
Derek Cerda assisted in adding an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double to score
Sawyer Smith from first base that included a slide around the tag at the plate.
Â
Kansas improved to 33-10 on the season and 13-6 in Big 12 play with the victory. The 33 wins are the most in a season for Kansas since 2014, the last time the Jayhawks made a regional.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Voegele and Utah starter Colter McAnelly matched each other through the first six innings. Each guy had to work around runners on the bases, but ultimately kept putting up zero after zero on the scoreboard.
• On the second pitch of the seventh inning that changed. Brooks took a first pitch ball and then hammered a fastball out to left field for a solo home run. That gave Kansas a 1-0 lead.
• The eighth inning started with Smith getting on base with a hit by pitch. Cerda came up next and drove a ball into the right-center field gap. Smith hustled around from the bases and slid to the outside of the plate and was able to avoid the catcher's tag to add a second run. Kansas led 2-0 needing six more outs.
• Voegele continued to cruise with a perfect eighth inning and the first two outs of the ninth. The next two Utah hitters had infield singles. Kansas then went to
Alex Breckheimer who threw one pitch and got a flyout to right field to end the game.

QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
"Fantastic Friday night pitcher's duel in the Big 12. I thought Dom was absolutely electric. It was all working and what a line – 8.2 innings, six hits, no walks, five punches and no runs. I thought he was super-efficient and he just did an outstanding job. Great to see Breck come in and slam it. An awesome night with timely hitting and a great at-bat by Brooks to put us up 1-0. Then, I thought the way we strung it together for one more in the eighth was huge. Super proud of how these guys competed and super proud of the team they are." – Head Coach
Dan Fitzgerald
Â
"It felt good. After the past couple outings it felt awesome to get back out there and have a redemption game…the defense is always awesome. They always come through. I feel like that's a big part of the game is trusting your defense. I'm just going out there and letting them make plays." –
