ARLINGTON, Texas – Kansas baseball will participate in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. CT against Oklahoma State at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers. The Jayhawks have qualified for the tournament in three consecutive seasons for the first time since 2017-19.
Â
"I don't think anything changes (for the postseason) with this group in particular," head coach
Dan Fitzgerald said. "They're old. There is some maturity. They love each other. They're really funny. Their energy is awesome. I think it's more of making sure we have things buttoned up and organized so they know where they need to be and when they need to be there. Then, right before the game make sure they are in the gates the right way and then when those gates pop open let them run."
Â
Fitzgerald was named Big 12 Coach of the Year on Tuesday. He is the first Big 12 Coach of the Year in program history. This season, he has led Kansas to be the only team in the country with at least 40 overall wins, 20 conference wins and 20 road wins. Kansas finished with more overall wins and conference wins than any team in the Big 12.
Â
In addition to Fitzgerald,
Brady Ballinger was named All-Big 12 First Team,
Jackson Hauge,
Cooper Moore and
Dariel Osoria all received All-Big 12 Second Team honors and
Brady Counsell was awarded All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
Â
The Jayhawks finished the regular with a three-game series sweep at conference champion West Virginia. The three-game series sweep on the road against a Top 25 team was the first since Feb. 14-16, 2003 at No. 3 LSU.
Â
Kansas is ranked No. 21 this week by Baseball America and No. 25 by D1Baseball and USA Today. KU is the only Power Four team in the country ranked in the top 10 nationally in both walks and home runs.
