LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 17 Kansas volleyball team will travel to Vermillion, South Dakota, this weekend for the Coyote Invitational, where the Jayhawks are scheduled to face Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, Green Bay on Friday and host team South Dakota on Saturday at the Sanford Coyote Sports Complex.
Kansas (3-4) has endured one of the most grueling starts in the nation, opening the season with four consecutive five-set matches. The Jayhawks snapped that streak with a 3-1 victory over Bowling Green and followed it up with their first top 25 win of the season, a 3-1 decision over then-No. 23 Georgia Tech. KU later pushed No. 17 Purdue to five sets on the road before falling 3-2.
"We are excited for another week of competition and the opportunity to grow," head coach
Matt Ulmer said. "I'd like to see our offense become more diverse and consistent. The team has been battling through a tough nonconference schedule, and I've been impressed with their attitudes and desire to learn."
The Jayhawks have leaned on balance and depth in the early going, with senior outside hitter
Rhian Swanson leading the offense with 98 kills across seven matches. Swanson has posted double-digit kills in six of those contests, highlighted by a season-high 22 at Purdue, 20 against Bowling Green, and 19 in the win over Georgia Tech. Sophomore middle blocker
Reese Ptacek has been a force at the net, ranking No. 10 nationally with 35 total blocks. Furthermore, senior libero
Ryan White has anchored the back row with a team-high 104 digs, the most by any Jayhawk this season.
Kansas has also made a national statement statistically. The Jayhawks ranks first nationally in total team blocks with 78, a total that includes 11 solo blocks and 134 block assists. Offensively, KU leads the country in both total kills (401) and total assists (374), standing as the only team in the country to eclipse the 370-assist mark.
The Jayhawks open the weekend on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT against Florida Gulf Coast before meeting Green Bay on Friday at the same time. The Jayhawks close the tournament Saturday at 5 p.m. CT against host South Dakota. All three matches can be streamed on Midco Sports Plus.
Kansas has remained firmly in the AVCA Top 25 for three straight weeks, checking in at No. 17 this week with 539 total points. After the first top 25 win of the season and a five-set battle against Purdue, the Jayhawks look to continue building their résumé and extend their national momentum at the Coyote Invitational.
