LAWRENCE, Kan. – Jaliya Davis has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, becoming only the fifth player in conference history to receive the honor in four consecutive weeks. The conference office announced its weekly awards Monday afternoon.
Davis led the Jayhawks to a 2-0 record last week, with wins at Arizona and home against Kansas State. She scored 25 points and set a new career-high with eight rebounds in KU's 80-69 victory Tuesday at Arizona, while adding three assists in 36 minutes of action. Davis followed that with 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in her first Dillons Sunflower Showdown, helping Kansas to an 83-61 win over Kansas State on Sunday. The win over Kansas State marked KU's first win over the Wildcats by more than 20 points since 1999.
A five-star prospect and McDonald's All-American from Overland Park, Kansas, Davis averaged 23.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the week, while adding 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. She shot 65.4 percent (17-26) from the field and 72.2 percent (13-18) from the free throw line. For the year, Davis is leading the Jayhawks with 20.8 points per game, a number that is even higher in Big 12 play at 22.0 points per game. Davis is the No. 2 leading scorer in the Big 12 during league play, and she's scored at least 20 points in seven of the eight games she's played in since returning from injury on Jan. 1.
This is the fourth consecutive time that Davis has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, placing her among an elite group of players. Davis joins Joyner Holmes (2017) of Texas, Ayoka Lee (2020) of Kansas State, Darianna Littlepage-Buffs (2023) and Delaney Gibb (2025) of BYU as the only players in league history to be named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week in four consecutive weeks.
As the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, Davis is included as a member of the Big 12 Women's Basketball Starting Five, which is voted on by a media panel to recognize strong performances from across the conference. In addition to four Freshman of the Week honors, Davis also earned a spot on the Big 12 Starting Five on Nov. 10. Kansas players have now earned seven Starting Five honors this season, with five for Davis and two for junior guard
S'Mya Nichols (Dec. 1; Dec. 8).
Kansas (13-8, 3-6 Big 12) carries the momentum if its two-game winning streak into a nationally televised matchup at No. 9 TCU on Thursday, Jan. 29. That game will be televised on ESPN, with tipoff set for 5 p.m. CT. Following that game, the Jayhawks are home for three straight games, beginning next Sunday, Feb. 1, against Colorado. Single-game tickets are available for each of KU's remaining home games and can be purchased by to visiting KUAthletics.com or calling 800-34-HAWKS.
