Sunday's contest features two teams searching for their first conference win. Kansas dropped to 10-4 (0-2 Big 12) following a 79-72 loss to West Virginia on New Year's Day. UCF enters the matchup at 8-5 (0-2 Big 12) after league losses against BYU and at No. 21 Texas Tech.
Â
Kansas dropped its first home game of the season to West Virginia despite the return of five-star freshman forward
Jaliya Davis. Davis, who missed 10 games due to injury, scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in her return. She has scored in double figures in all four games she has played this season, averaging 18.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Â
Four players scored in double figures for KU against WVU, with junior guard
S'Mya Nichols (16), senior forward
Lilly Meister (13) and senior guard
Elle Evans (11) joining Davis. The game marked the fourth time this season that four or more Jayhawks have scored in double figures, and the first time in Big 12 play.
Â
Nichols was 10-of-11 from the free throw line against West Virginia, marking the fifth time this season she's made at least 10 free throws in a game. Nichols, the Big 12's No. 3 leading scorer at 19.7 points per game, leads the country in both free throws made (107) and attempted (127) this season. She is also closing in on KU's all-time free throw record with 491 made in her career, trailing only the legendary Lynette Woodard, who made 505 free throws as a Jayhawk.
Â
Evans went 3-for-4 from downtown vs. West Virginia, and she now leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage. She's shooting 53.0 percent (35-66) from long range on the year, and she's one of just six players nationally shooting better than 50 percent from three.
Â
Meister finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards against WVU. She has now scored in double figures five times in the past seven games, missing a double-double by one rebound twice in that stretch. Meister is fifth on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game, while leading KU with 7.3 rebounds per game.
Â
Freshman guard
Libby Fandel hit both of her three-point attempts vs. West Virginia, marking the fourth-straight game in which she has made multiple threes. Fandel is shooting 50 percent (12-of-24) from three-point range during that stretch, and she has raised her scoring average to 5.1 points per game for the year.
Â
Sunday's meeting will be the fourth all-time matchup between Kansas and UCF and the third as conference foes. Kansas holds a 2-1 series advantage, including wins in each of the past two seasons. The Jayhawks earned a 65-53 victory in their most recent trip to Orlando on Feb. 29, 2024.
