SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kansas men's golf return to action on Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 12-14, at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, hosted by Utah at The Country Club in Salt Lake City.
Kansas will compete in Pool D of the tournament, playing against TCU, West Virginia and Baylor. The Jayhawks will face Baylor on Monday at 9 a.m. CT before facing West Virginia in the afternoon session at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday's play begins by facing TCU at 9 a.m. prior to bracket play beginning in the afternoon. The fifth round of matches will take place on Wednesday morning beginning at 9 a.m.
"We're heading into a match play event this week, so a lot different strategy than stroke play," Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. "I've never been to the country club in Salt Lake City, but I heard the greens are really fast and a good test of golf."
Each of the 16 Big 12 schools will play in the event. Pool A of the tournament includes Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Arizona and UCF, while Pool B is Texas Tech, Colorado, Kansas State and Houston. Pool C is comprised of Arizona State, BYU, Utah and Iowa State.
"We need to win three of the five points to win a match, so the matchups are critical," Bermel added of the tournament's format.
The Jayhawks are coming off of their second win of the year at the Windon Memorial Classic, played on Sept. 28-29 in Lake Forest, Illinois. With the win, Kansas has now multiple events in a season for the first time since 2021.
Kansas will sport the same lineup it used at the Windon Memorial, a group that includes Will Baker, Hartej Grewal, Nicolas Vidal-Reig, Arthur Carlier and Noah Holtzman. Max Jelinek will join as a potential substitute.
Grewal paced the Jayhawks at the Windon Memorial, finishing in a tie for fourth by shooting a 206 (-4) and collecting his first top 10 of the season.
Carlier joined him in the top 10, finishing just two shots behind Grewal at 208 (-2) and adding his second top 10 placement of the season. For his efforts to start the season, Carlier was named the Big 12 Men's Golfer of the month for September.
Baker was the third Jayhawk to shoot even or better, wrapping up the event at even-par and finishing tied for 15th.
Vidal-Reig and Holtzman finished in the top 50 at the Windon Memorial, finishing in 43rd and 50th respectively.
Jelinek will be prepared to compete at his second event of the year, finishing tied for 46th at the Folds of Honor Collegiate.
"I know the guys are excited to play match play," Bermel said.
