LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women's tennis lost its first match of the season to No. 21 Clemson in a 4-1 match on Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Kansas falls to 3-1 on the season, while Clemson improves to 6-1 on the year.
"I think we got beat by the better team today," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "I feel like we weren't tough enough mentally and emotionally to beat a good team like Clemson today. Those are things we've got to get better at and improve, because we're going to play plenty of good teams this spring. But I didn't necessarily love our responses when we faced adversity today."
In doubles action, Kansas dropped two matches to give Clemson the doubles point. It is the first time this season that the Jayhawks have surrendered the doubles point. Kyoka Kubo and Heike Janse van Vuuren picked up a win on court one however, as they defeated the Tigers' Jade Groen and Rinon Okuwaki 6-2 to move to 4-0 on the season.
The Jayhawks were able to pick up one singles win on court one, as Kubo won 6-1, 6-2 over Groen to give Kansas its only point of the day. Kubo moved to 4-0 on the season in singles play. Clemson found wins on courts two, three and five to clinch the match with a score of 4-1.Â
On court four, McCarty was leading the match over Ria Bhakta 7-5, 2-1 before the match went unfinished.Â
