Kansas Tennis Falls 4-3 to Arkansas Sunday

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kansas women's tennis battled back but dropped its match 4-3 against Arkansas on Sunday afternoon at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Kansas dropped to 3-4 on the season, while Arkansas improved to 7-1 on the year.
"Losing tough matches hurts, and today hurts," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "What we choose to do from here will define what the next section of our season looks like. We have to embrace what is hard and choose to respond in a way that gives us a chance to be successful moving forward."
The Jayhawks started the match off strong, taking the doubles point over the Razorbacks. On court two, Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty, ranked No. 73, picked up their first win of the season by taking down Jimena Gomez Alonso and Brooke Schafer 6-2. Court three sealed the doubles point for Kansas, with Kyoka Kubo and Meriem Ben Ezzedine defeating Arina Babenko and Alexan Panagiotidou 7-5.Â
Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina faced off against No. 27 Carolina Gomez Alonso and Anet Koskel but fell 6-2 on court one.
The Jayhawks were able to take two singles matches to go up 3-2 in the match, but ultimately dropped four singles matches to lose the match 4-3. On court two, van Vuuren defeated Schafer in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-3, along with Nahyeong Cho on court five as she took a 7-5, 6-3 straight-set win over Babenko.
The Razorbacks picked up wins on courts one, three, four and six. No. 22 C. Gomez Alonso defeated No. 25 Kubo 7(9)-6(7), 6-3 on court one. In the other singles matches, Koskel defeated Arystanbekova 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, Panagiotidou defeated McCarty 6-3, 6-3, and J. Gomez Alonso defeated Putilina 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to grant Arkansas the 4-3 win.
