Lawrence, Kan. – Kansas softball travels to Boca Raton, Florida, this weekend to compete in the Joan Joyce Classic, facing Florida Atlantic, Villanova, Southern Indiana and UMass. The Jayhawks open tournament play at 5 p.m. CT against FAU on Thursday, Feb. 19.
The Jayhawks enter the tournament riding momentum after a strong stretch in Tampa that included a 7-2 win against South Florida to secure head coach
Jennifer McFalls' 150th career Kansas victory and a pair of run-rule wins over DePaul and Yale. Kansas has continued to show growth early in the season, improving to 7-4 while facing a challenging nonconference schedule.
"We've been really intentional about our growth these first few weeks, and I think Tampa showed what this team is capable of when we play complete softball," said
Jennifer McFalls. "Our offense is finding ways to put pressure on opponents, our pitching staff continues to compete in big moments, and now it's about building consistency."
Offensively, the Jayhawks have demonstrated the ability to produce in bunches. Kansas erupted for 10 runs in the first two innings against Indiana State and later used a four-run seventh inning to pull away from South Florida, highlighting the lineup's depth and ability to capitalize in key moments.
September Flanagan and
Aynslee Linduff have provided consistent power, while
Presley Limbaugh's speed and on-base presence at the top of the lineup continues to create scoring opportunities.
In the circle, Kansas has relied on a balanced pitching staff led by
Chloe Barber and
Kaelee Washington, with contributions throughout the rotation and bullpen. The staff delivered multiple shutdown performances during the Tampa stretch, including a pair of shutouts in Saturday's run-rule sweep and a clutch late-inning relief appearance to close out the win over South Florida.
The Jayhawks look to build consistency and carry momentum deeper into the nonconference season.
