BEAUMONT, Texas – Kansas baseball dropped its midweek contest 4-1 against Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Wednesday evening. A three-run homer by Lamar in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference.

Sophomore
Mason Cook, a transfer from McLennan Community College, started the game for the Jayhawks and threw five strong shutout innings. He allowed only one hit, while walking two and striking out six. He struck out five of the final six batters he faced. However, the bullpen surrendered four total runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Lamar (3-2) tied up the game in the sixth inning. After two strikeouts by
Riane Ritter to start the inning, the Cardinals got back-to-back hits down the left and right field lines to score a run. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of six innings.
• In the seventh, Lamar was able to grab the lead with a three-run homer by Beau Durbin. That made it a 4-1 Cardinals lead.
• Kansas (2-2) was unable to score in the eighth or ninth after leaving one runner stranded in the eighth and two runners left on base in the ninth.

QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
"It's a tough sport to win when you strand 14 runners. We had a bunch of chances early and we just couldn't punch a hit through. In the sixth, they get the bloop into left and the bloop into right to tie the game and that's what happens when you're up one run. If we cash in early on some of those things, that run doesn't hurt you. I thought (Riane) Ritter was good, but thought the right move there was to go to Kannon with the two guys on. Kannon was the right matchup there. Unfortunately for us, that kid got a nice swing off. This game was more about us not executing the opportunities we had rather than anything else. On the bright side, Mason was great and we played another sound game defensively. Back to the drawing board tomorrow." – Head Coach
Dan Fitzgerald
