LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas softball freshman catcher Ella Boyer has been named to the NFCA D1 Freshman of the Year Top 25. This is Boyer's second national recognition of the season, and has received three Big 12 weekly honors as well.Â
"Ella has been a difference maker all season, " Kansas head coach Jennifer McFalls said about Boyer. "First of all, she makes the players around her better. When you have a hitter that is putting up 50+ RBI's, everyone knows she's special. In addition, she's a talented catcher that works extremely hard and has given us some quality innings behind the plate."
Boyer has been one of the biggest stars for the Kansas offense this season. Her 17 home runs broke a Kansas freshman record, and she is only six home runs from breaking the Kansas all-time single season home run record of 22. To go along with her team leading 17 home runs, Boyer leads Kansas with a 1.324 OPS, 52 RBIs, .837 slugging percentage, 31 walks, and .487 on base percentage. Boyer has also put together a near perfect season defensively, carrying a .992 fielding percentage.
Boyer's stellar freshman season has put her among the top of the ranks nationally. Among all freshmen, she ranks fourth in home runs, fifth in RBIs, sixth in RBIs per game and fourth in slugging percentage, proving to be one of the best freshman hitters in the country.Â
Kansas softball will continue its historic season as they host Iowa State in a three-game series April 24-26. The Jayhawks are currently tied for third place in the Big 12 and will be looking to move up in the standings this weekend.Â
