FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Kansas track and field traveled to Arkansas and Oklahoma this weekend to compete in the John McDonnell Invitational and OU O'Ring Open.
Anthony Meacham set a new outdoor school record in the men's pole vault, while the team won seven events, and set 18 personal bests.
"I was excited for the team. It was good to have winners, especially with some in areas that haven't won in previous meets," Kansas head coach
Stanley Redwine said. "To see athletes contributing and placing in the top three is exciting. The meet also magnified some areas that we need to correct before next weekend's home competition.
Anthony Meacham continues to show that he is ready and it was a great job by him, and Coach Hays once again."
Meacham broke the previous school record in the pole vault of 5.77 meters when he cleared 5.80 meters on his first try Friday night to win the event. It was the second time he had cleared the 19 foot mark in his career, after previously making that mark at the Battle on the Bayou earlier this year, while competing inside due to weather. His mark is tied for the top national clearance this season and tied the meet record.
The Jayhawks first got underway in the women's 4x100 meter relay where they placed 11th. Mason Meinershagen then won her fifth straight pole vault of the outdoor season, in as many attempts, with a 4.22 meter clearance and Deshana Skeete placed fourth in the women's 400 meters.
Sidney Smith picked up the second win of the day for Kansas when she won her second straight women's 400 meter hurdles, finishing in 58.50 seconds, while Devan Mathis and Gergo Takacs both set personal bests to finish fourth and sixth for the men.
In the field, Kierson Wicks set a new personal best in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.17 meters, tied for the tenth highest mark in the country this season. Richelle Stanley also won the women's long jump with a personal best 6.29 meters jump, picking up her first win of the season.
Kori Randle won her first event of the year when she triple jumped 12.93 meters and Conor Dunback finished second in the men's javelin throw with a personal best 60.05 meters throw. In addition to Meacham's record setting vault, Bryce Barkdull cleared 5.60 meters to finish as the second best collegiate athlete in the event.
To close out the night, Tanner Talley won the men's 800 meter run with a personal best time of 1:48.57 while Maureen Chepkirui finished as the second best collegiate runner in the women's 800 meter invite.
Hobbs Campbell finished third in the men's 1,500 meter run with a personal best time of 3:42.88. Abigail O'Leary finished second in the women's 3,000 meter run and Irine Jepkirui finished third, before the women's 4x400 relay team finished second.
At the OU O'Ring Open, Addie Cline finished second in the women's shot put while Sofia Sluchaninova won the women's discus throw with a best mark of 51.45 meters (168-9 ft.).
