ATHENS, Ga. – The Kansas men's golf team fired a round of eight-under par on Tuesday to climb into a tie for 10th after two rounds of the NCAA Athens Regional, which is being played at the University of Georgia Golf Course.Â
The Jayhawks' impressive round finished with a team total of 276 strokes, which is eight-under par and evened KU's overall stroke total through two rounds at 568. Vanderbilt leads the way after recording a 15-under round two team score to move to 22-under on the tournament. Louisville sits in second at 19-under, followed by Auburn at 14-under, Georgia at 12-under, and BYU at 11-under.Â
"We played better today as a team," Kansas coach Jamie Bermel said following the round. "Our guys seemed more focused and determined today. We started off well, then carried that momentum through as we also finished well."
Junior Will Baker and freshman Arthur Carlier led the way for the Jayhawks in round two, with both golfers finishing with a score of 68 (-3). Carlier carded six birdies throughout Tuesday's round and sits inside the top 20 individually going into Wednesday's final round. Baker carded five birdies in round two and he's now tied for 47th individually after two rounds.Â
Senior Luke Honner and sophomore Hartej Grewal are both tied for 52nd place going into Wednesday's final round. Honner put together his best round of the tournament in round two, tallying four birdies to go along with a 69 (-2). Grewal carded two birdies and finished with a score of 72 (+1).
Junior Max Jelinek replaced senior Will King for the second round of the tournament. Jelinek finished round two with a score of 71 (E), carding a pair of birds throughout the day.Â
"I'm really proud of Max today,"Â Bermel added. "Will King couldn't play today and Max stepped in nicely. Will Baker, Arthur, and Luke all shot under par and looked good out there. We are going to need a better round on Wednesday as we still have a ways to go."
