IRVING, Texas – For the first time this season and fourth time in his career, Kansas junior right-handed pitcher Dominic Voegele has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. The conference office announced the weekly awards on Monday. Voegele shared the honor with Baylor's Lucas Davenport.
Voegele tossed his first career complete game on Friday night in KU's 4-2 win against Arizona. He allowed six hits and two runs while matching his career high with 15 strikeouts, a mark he previously set 13 days prior on April 18 at Oklahoma State. Voegele retired the final 10 batters he faced and 14 of the last 15, which concluded with two strikeouts in the ninth inning. Voegele has now recorded double-digit strikeouts five times in his career and he's the only Division I pitcher with at least 15 strikeouts in multiple games this season. He is also one of just three pitchers nationally to throw a nine-inning complete game with 15 or more strikeouts this season.
Voegele becomes the first Jayhawk to throw a complete game since Sam Ireland at Belmont on March 4, 2023, and the first to do so in a conference game since Daniel Hegarty on April 29, 2022, vs. West Virginia. With the win, Voegele improved to 5-2 on the year and he has 84 strikeouts over 67.2 innings pitched. He ranks fifth in the Big 12 in strikeouts and his 11.17 strikeouts per nine innings ranks sixth in the conference. The Arizona game marked the fourth straight quality start for Voegele and his sixth of the season.
Last season, Voegele was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on three occasions, earning the honor on March 31, April 28 and May 19. He now becomes the first Kansas pitcher ever to win the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award four times in his career. Voegele joins Tyson Owens, Boede Rahe, Tyson LeBlanc and Mathis Nayral as a Big 12 weekly award winner this season.
Following a three-game sweep of Arizona, Kansas improved to 37-11 on the year and the Jayhawks remain atop the Big 12 standings with a 20-4 record and two series remaining. The series win over Arizona was the seventh-straight Big 12 series win for Kansas, establishing a new program record. The Jayhawks have now won 10 straight games, 21 of the last 22 overall and 20 of the last 22 against conference foes. With a 20-4 record in conference play, KU now has its best conference record through 24 games in school history.
Kansas returns to action on Tuesday, May 5, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha against Creighton. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on Nebraska Public Media. The Jayhawks return home to Hoglund Ballpark for the final regular season home series of the season, hosting No. 15 West Virginia for three games beginning on Friday, May 8, at 6 p.m. CT.
