OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Kansas softball heads to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as the Jayhawks take on UCF in the first round of the Big 12 Softball Tournament, on Thursday, May 7. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT from OGE Energy Field at Devon Park and will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
Kansas (34–18, 14-10 Big 12) is headed into the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 5 seed. After beating Oklahoma State on May 2, Kansas now has 18 top 100 RPI wins, 10 top 50 RPI wins and four top 25 RPI wins. The Jayhawks currently rank No. 39 in RPI, 35 in KPI and 30 in DSR. Kansas finished the season 6-2 in Big 12 series, which is tied for the second-best in the conference. Â
The Jayhawks' 34 wins are the most under head coach Jennifer McFalls, and the most overall since 2015. Kansas has also set a program record in conference wins (14), home runs (80), doubles (94), runs scored (354) and RBIs (336).
"I think it's more excitement than pressure," head coach Jennifer McFalls said about the matchup with UCF. "Especially going up against a team like UCF on Thursday, I think we know we match up really well. Where our teams are could not possibly be more identical than two teams in the Big 12."
In the series against Oklahoma State, Kansas picked up a huge 10-1 win in game two. The Jayhawks got off to a hot start, scoring five runs on seven hits in the first inning. Kansas never looked back from there, picking up 16 hits and scoring 10 runs. Lila Partridge dominated in the circle, giving up one run on just two hits and threw her fifth straight complete game.Â
UCF (38-15-1, 14-9-1 Big 12) enters the Big 12 tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Knights bring in a high-powered offense, notching 356 runs, 447 hits, 13 triples, 747 total bases, 211 walks and 47 hit batters, all top five in the Big 12. UCF is also led by Sophia Vega in the circle, who is in the top 10 in the Big 12 in ERA (2.88), Wins (17), complete games (11), innings pitched (136.0) and batting average against (.204).Â
