OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Kansas fell to top-seeded Texas Tech 14-0 in the semifinal of the Big 12 Softball Tournament at OGE Energy Field at Devon Park.Â
Kansas falls to 35-19 (15-11 Big 12) and will find out where they will play in the NCAA Tournament during the selection show Sunday, May 10 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2
"We just have to stay positive and believe in each other," head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "Our lineup has been really effective, one through nine, all season. So it's really not about one player. We've got some weapons in our lineup, we just have to stay within ourselves and stay in control."
The Jayhawks go into the NCAA Tournament with 19 top 100 RPI wins, 11 top 50 RPI wins and five top 25 RPI wins. Kansas has also picked up five ranked wins against No. 20 Arizona State (April 3, 11-7; April 4, 5-4), No. 24 UCF (April 19, 4-2), No. 13 Oklahoma State (May 2, 10-1) and No. 22 UCF (May 7, 6-5).
How It Happened | vs. Texas Tech
- After a scoreless top of the first for Kansas, Texas Tech got the scoring started in the bottom half of the inning as designated player Jasmyn Burns hit a three-run home run to right field, giving the Red Raiders a 3-0 lead through one.Â
- In the second inning, Kansas went down in order, and freshman Sam Claire, making her first career start in the circle, worked around a walk and a single to keep the score 3-0.Â
- The Jayhawks picked up their first hit of the game in the third, as junior September Flanagan led the inning off with a single to left field, but Texas Tech was able to get the next three Kansas batters out, getting out of the inning unscathed.Â
- Texas Tech extended its lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the third off a solo home run hit by first baseman Jackie Lis, a three-run home run off the bat of third baseman Taylor Purnell and a pinch-hit solo home run from Desirae Spearman.Â
- After another scoreless inning for Kansas in the top of the fourth, Texas Tech stretched the lead in the bottom of the fourth to 14-0 on six runs and six hits.Â
- In the top of the fifth, senior Aynlee Linduff led the inning off with a hit by pitch. Two batters later, Flanagan hit her second single of the game to put runners on the corners for the Jayhawks with one out. Kansas could not capitalize, as Texas Tech struck the next two batters out, ending the game, 14-0.
