NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Jayhawks earned their first win of the season, defeating Lipscomb in four sets on Thursday night in Nashville.

Kansas got its first look at freshman Jaeli Rutledge in a starting lineup, and the rookie made it count immediately, recording her first career kill off the match's opening serve. The Jayhawks also got contributions across the roster, with Taylor Stanley leading the way with 16 kills and five blocks, while Reese Ptacek added 14 kills on a .542 hitting percentage. Kenzie Dean chipped in 10 kills, and setter Reese Messer ran the offense to the tune of 40 assists and a .262 team hitting percentage. Grace Nelson and Olivia Hasbrook each served up four aces, with Hasbrook also pacing all players with 18 digs.

The first set was tight early, with the two teams trading points and Kansas errors keeping Lipscomb within reach. Back-to-back aces from Nelson pushed Kansas ahead 7-4, and a setter dump kill from Messer stretched the lead to 10-6. With Ptacek serving, Kansas ripped off a 7-0 run to make it 15-6 at the media timeout, and Dean's point coming out of the break extended it further. The run eventually reached 10 straight before topping out at 19-6, with freshmen Avery Poulton and Tessa Dodd both making their collegiate debuts during the surge. Lipscomb answered with a 7-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 19-13, but Nelson closed it out with a service ace to secure the set, 25-18.

Kansas carried the momentum into the second set, going back and forth with Lipscomb before a kill from Stanley and a solo block gave the Jayhawks a 15-14 edge. Hasbrook followed with an ace out of a timeout to make it 16-14, and Kansas reeled off a 10-0 run to take control at 22-14. Ptacek delivered her 10th kill of the match to close out the 25-17 set win.

Lipscomb found its footing in the third set, using back-to-back kills to move ahead 12-10. A setter dump from Messer tied it at 14-14, but the Bisons regained the lead and Kansas entered the media timeout trailing 14-15. Dean's kill pulled Kansas even again at 17-17, but Lipscomb pulled away down the stretch to take the set, 25-20.

Kansas responded in the fourth, opening with a 3-0 run before Lipscomb won a replay challenge to tie it at 3-3. The set stayed tight until back-to-back kills from Stanley and an ace from Logan Bell pushed the Jayhawks in front, 15-11. A 5-0 run forced a Lipscomb timeout, and Kansas answered with another 3-0 spurt to extend the lead to 22-15. An ace from Nelson made it 24-15 before Ptacek closed out the match with her 14th kill of the night, sealing the 25-16 set and the 3-1 victory.

Kansas continues play at the Lipscomb Invitational on Friday at 3 p.m. against Florida State.
