Lawrence, Kan. – After a two-week break to focus on preparation, the Kansas men's and women's cross country teams are set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the 2024 Wisconsin Pre-Nationals.
This year's event will feature three races for each gender, with Kansas competing in the Women's Open 6K, Men's Open 8K, Women's B 6K and Men's B 8K. The Jayhawks will first appear in the Women's Open 6K, kicking off at 11:20 a.m. CT.
At last year's Pre-Nationals, the men's team placed 15th overall. Tanner Newkirk finished 73rd with a time of 24:21.6, followed by Tanner Talley in 88th at 24:29.0. On the women's side, Kenadi Krueger led the Jayhawks with a 15th-place finish in 21:11.2, while Tori Wingrove secured 33rd with a time of 21:42.1, contributing to the women's fifth-place finish.
"We are looking forward to great competition at the Pre-NCAA meet in Wisconsin," Kansas Distance Coach Michael Whittlesey said. "It is our last race before the championship season, and we are excited to have one of our top returners, Cale Littrell, back on the men's team. This will solidify a strong front pack of four with Tanner Talley, Quenton Walion and Sawyer Schmidt. The women are also anticipating another stellar field of competition to challenge our front runners, Kenadi Krueger and Dorcas Kiptanui. Our team has been working well on running together with the next group, and we are eager to see the results."Â
A total of 21 student-athletes will represent the Jayhawks in Madison. The Kansas men's cross country team will feature senior Walion, juniors Schmidt and Talley, sophomores Hobbs Campbell, Isaac Graff, Ryo Higuchi and Lenny Njorge, redshirt junior Littrell, freshman Samuel Trumble and Blake Wohler.
On the women's side, freshmen Mira Murray and Kaitlyn Swarts, sophomores Laya Erickson, Kiptanui and Abigail Street, juniors Wingrove, redshirt junior Eden Schwarz, redshirt sophomore Delaney Fitzgerald and redshirt senior Aaliyah Moore, along with super seniors Caroline Horning and Krueger will represent the Jayhawks in the field.
