LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas men's and women's cross country teams are prepared to compete in the first postseason meet of the season at the Big 12 Cross Country Championship, held at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas, on Friday, Nov. 1.
The Big 12 Cross Country Championship will kick off with the women's 6K race at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 11:00 a.m. The top 15 finishers in both the men's and women's races will earn spots on the All-Big 12 Team.
"Both teams are excited about competing at the conference meet this Friday," Kansas Distance Coach Michael Whittlesey said. "The Big 12 is the strongest cross country conference in the nation, and we are ready to test ourselves against the best. We are looking for our upperclassmen to lead the way and set the tone for both teams this week."
At last year's Big 12 Championship in Ames, Iowa, both Kansas teams finished sixth overall. Senior
Chandler Gibbens led the men's team with an 11th-place finish in the 8K (23:13.0), earning All-Big 12 honors. The men held strong, with
Tanner Talley and
Cale Littrell placing 44th and 51st, respectively, outpacing Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Kansas State.
Kansas'
Lona Latema and
Kenadi Krueger led the way on the women's side, finishing 35th (20:56.8) and 36th (20:58.3) in the 6K, with
Tori Wingrove rounding out the top 50. Their sixth-place finish edged out Texas, TCU, and Texas Tech.
During the regular season, the Jayhawks showcased strong performances across multiple meets.
Both Kansas teams clinched first-place titles at the Bob Timmons Classic. The men's team defended their 6K title, with junior
Tanner Talley and senior
Quenton Walion leading the way and finishing in the top three. On the women's side, the team captured the 5K title with standout performances from senior
Kenadi Krueger, who claimed first, and freshman Dorcus Kiptanui who had a solid third-place cross-country season debut.
At the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 27, Talley, Walion, and sophomore
Sawyer Schmidt achieved top-100 finishes in the men's 8K, and Krueger set a personal best at the Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4. Most recently, Kansas concluded the regular season at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Oct. 19, where
Delaney Fitzgerald, Krueger, Kiptanui, and Talley led Kansas with notable times and top-70 finishes.
