HOUSTON – The Kansas men's golf team will continue their fall season and get their first look at the Big 12 Conference in this year's rendition of Big 12 Match Play at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, Oct. 7-9.
"It's a sunflower showdown for the first match of the event," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "This is a great way to start out match play. It seems like we play K-State in this event every year. It's always a battle to the very last match, and I am certain this year will be no different."
Bermel will travel a lineup of graduate student Gunnar Broin, juniors Luke Honner and Will King, and sophomores Max Jelinek and Noah Holtzman.
Broin comes into Big 12 match play leading the Jayhawks in an 18-hole scoring average at 70.67. Broin also leads the team in rounds in the 60's so far this fall as he has fired off three rounds in the 60's this season. Broin is coming off back-to-back finishes in the Top 10 at the Bearcat Invitational and the Windon Memorial Classic, where Broin shot 66 to propel himself into eighth place most recently.
King heads to Houston also coming off a 66 in the final round at the Windon Memorial Classic, where he jumped up 30 spots on the leaderboard with his final round performance. King also saw success at the Bearcat Invitational where he used two rounds in the 60's to take third place at -5.
Jelinek comes into the tournament with an 18-hole scoring average of 73.78, coupled with three rounds at par or lower. Jelinek has provided a spark in the middle of the lineup for the Jayhawks. Jelinek's fall season has been highlighted by a 69 at the Folds of Honor Collegiate on Sept. 10.
Honner and Holtzman have both helped the Jayhawks in their first few starts for Kansas. Honner is looking to ride the momentum from last week, as he recorded a one over par round coupled with a two over par round en route to his best finish as a Jayhawk. Holtzman in his first two starts fired off consecutive tournaments at seven over par to help the Jayhawks to a podium finish at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati.
"Match play is a unique event," said Bermel. "I have seen guys play really well and get beat and I have seen guys play poorly and win. It should be a fun week of golf."
Kansas has been placed in Pool B with Oklahoma State, Kansas State and UCF. In the Monday morning session, the Jayhawks will take on their in-state rivals, Kansas State. On Monday afternoon, the Jayhawks will meet the Knights of UCF. In their third matchup of the tournament, Tuesday morning, Kansas will take on Oklahoma State.
