LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks improved to 20-1 overall and 11-0 in Big 12 play with a 3-0 sweep of West Virginia on Saturday afternoon in the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.Â
This match was Kansas' Alumni Recognition, as well as the jersey retirement of former Kansas Volleyball standout Josi Lima, who played from 2002-2005 and holds Kansas' all-time points record with 1,856.5 total during her career.Â
"It was so cool to have everyone back," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "You see them all lined up with their families and doing all the things after their career here, and it's kind of like a proud dad or proud papa moment. And, we won a match. I was really excited about
Ellie Schneider - she comes in, gets five kills and a couple blocks, and I think it's a testament to her and how she shows up every day and how she works extra hard."
The first set consisted of some back and forth play through the first few points, but a block and two huge kills from
Rhian Swanson would be enough to finally give Kansas a substantial lead.
Ayah Elnady started to heat up as well, racking up six total kills and hitting .667. The Mountaineers showed some promise towards the end of the set, closing things back up late, but Kansas kept their foot on the gas, taking the 25-18 victory.Â
KU kept the momentum rolling in the second, with some new faces checking in to join in on the attack.
Ellie Schneider checked in at opposite and knocked down back-to-back kills to get the home crowd fired up, and
Molly McCarthy subbed in on defense. A third Schneider kill would be enough for a West Virginia timeout as Kansas got up 12-6. The visiting side was able to get as close as 14-10, but Kansas stayed calm to maintain their lead. Kansas created as large as a 10-point deficit, and from there, West Virginia would only produce two more points for the remainder of the set.Â
Set three was much closer to start, with things tying multiple times up through 10-10. West Virginia then found their first real lead of the match, up 12-10, but Elnady's 10th kill of the match followed by a
Camryn Turner and
Toyosi Onabanjo block would tie things up once again at 12-12. Kansas regained the lead from there, and had no problem closing it out on their home floor.Â
Elnady ended the match with a double-double, posting 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Jayhawks, hitting .323 on the day. Swanson tallied the next-most kills for Kansas with eight total, recording a .421 hitting percentage. Turner kept the offense rolling with 37 assists while also racking up nine digs.Â
Next, Kansas will take a four-day road trip to Arizona to take on Arizona State on Wednesday, November 6, followed by Arizona on Friday, November 8. These matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+.Â
