STANFORD, Calif. – For the fourth consecutive season, the Kansas men’s golf team will be competing for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championship after qualifying for the NCAA Regional in Stanford, California (May 13-15). After claiming first place in the regional round last season, the Jayhawks are hoping to stamp their ticket to the NCAA Championship in back-to-back years for the third time in program history and first time since 1999-2000.
For KU to advance to their 13th NCAA Championship, they will have to finish amongst the top-five in the 13-team field that includes No. 2 Arizona State, No. 12 Stanford, No. 14 LSU and No. 24 NC State according to Golfstat.com’s national rankings. The 38th-ranked Jayahwks will need to accomplish this feat on the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course that will be new terrain to all of KU’s competitors.
However, this course is not unfamiliar territory to KU head coach Jamie Bermel who has experience in Stanford dating back to his days with Colorado State.
“Par is a premium and I think patience will be a premium,” Bermel said. “I think if we can just plot our way around the golf course and take advantage of the holes that we can take advantage of and survive the hard ones, I think we will be just fine.”
Seventh-seeded Kansas will begin its first of three rounds on Monday morning beginning at 11:25 a.m. (Central). The Jayhawks will be grouped alongside eighth-seed Virginia and ninth-seed Ole Miss for round one.
