DURHAM, N.C. - Kansas Volleyball kicked off their 2024 campaign by sweeping the South Carolina Gamecocks Friday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium as a part of the Duke Tournament. Senior
Caroline Bien led the Jayhawks with 12 kills and senior setter
Camryn Turner finished the match with 27 assists.
"I thought we settled down after the first set and served much better," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "We were organized defensively, and then when you have good balance offensively, good things happen, so it's a good way to get started."
Kansas kicked things off by winning the first set in a narrow 25-23 victory. Senior
London Davis took charge offensively, tallying four kills for the Jayhawks. Senior
Toyosi Onabanjo, Sophomore
Aisha Aiono, and Bien all finished with three kills in the first frame. Redshirt junior
Bryn McGehe also totaled five digs in the first set, leading the way defensively.Â
The Jayhawks were able to carry the momentum into the second set in a much more dominant fashion, grabbing the first three points of the set, and continuing to apply pressure from there. Kansas rolled in the second set, highlighted by a 7-0 run late in the frame and would go on to hold South Carolina to single digits all the way through 21-9. Bien added four more kills, and Turner added 10 assists in the second set victory.
Kansas dominated in the third set, at one point scoring eight straight points, and 14 of 16 during the third and final set. Freshmen
Zoey Burgess and
Grace Nelson both recorded their first career kills as a Jayhawk in the final frame, as Kansas cruised to a 25-10 victory, completing the sweep of the Gamecocks.
Kansas will be back in action tomorrow to take on the Duke Blue Devils inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. First serve is set for 2 p.m. and the match can be streamed on the ACC Network. (Subscription Required)Â
