LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 11 Kansas Volleyball team swept Lipscomb 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. Senior
Ayah Elnady broke the record for most aces in a three-set match by a Jayhawk with eight total, surpassing the previous 1995 record of seven held by Maggie Mohrfeld.Â
"We value the pass and serve aspect of every match, but we put additional emphasis on first contact for this match and it was key to building and sustaining momentum," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard.
The match started off relatively close, but the Jayhawks quickly found their stride and ran up the score 8-3 in the first set, forcing an early Bison timeout. Elnady answered that timeout with back-to-back aces, however, putting Lipscomb in an even larger deficit. Kansas held Lipscomb to single digits all the way through 19-9, and the visiting Bison would only score four more points through the remainder of the set. Elnady added a third ace on the 23rd point, putting the Jayhawks at seven total aces in the first set alone.Â
Set two was an even tighter race at first, with Kansas never having greater than a four-point lead until the score read 18-13. At 20-14, Lipscomb looked to flip the momentum back in their favor with a timeout, but Kansas kept the pressure on, winning by a final score of 25-16.Â
The third set took a much different tone, with three-consecutive ties late in the set that proved Lipscomb finally caught onto the Jayhawks' game plan. 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18 came until Kansas knocked down back-to-back kills from Elnady and
Toyosi Onabanjo, pushing the Bison to call time. Elnady kept her serving momentum running to keep the Bison back on their heels, knocking down three-consecutive service aces to make the score 24-19. This brought her match total to eight, tying her career-high that she achieved back on September 17, 2022.Â
"Because of the energy that the crowd brings, I feel like it's just easier for me to serve here in Horejsi," said Elnady.Â
Elnady also notched 11 kills and hit .381 on the day, while Onabanjo posted the same number of kills on a .625 hitting percentage.
Camryn Turner kept the offense moving with 34 total assists, while
Raegan Burns anchored the defense with eight total digs.Â
As a group, the Jayhawks notched a season-high 13 total aces. The team's hitting percentage was .373, posting 42 kills and just 11 errors.Â
Up next, Kansas will host the Jayhawk Classic from September 19-21, where Tulsa, No. 7 Purdue and No. 10 Creighton will come to Horejsi for a weekend. The Jayhawks will kick their weekend off against the Boilermakers on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
