GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The Kansas men's golf team is set to open their 2024-25 season on Monday at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in Grand Haven, Michigan at American Dunes Golf Club, with all three rounds being televised on Golf Channel.Â
Entering his 13th season with the Jayhawks, Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel will travel a lineup of graduate student Gunnar Broin, juniors Will King and Luke Honner, and sophomores Max Jelinek and Noah Holtzman. The Jayhawks will look to replicate last year's success and defend Cecil Belisle's medalist honors.
Kansas is coming off the program's eighth-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, finishing in 11th-place at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional in 2023-24.
"We're really looking forward to starting the year at American Dunes in a great field and on a terrific golf course," said Bermel. "The guys have been working hard and competing every day in practice, so it's time to put it to the test."
The Folds of Honor was founded by former Jayhawk, Lieutenant Colonel Dan Rooney, who played golf at the University of Kansas and dedicated his life to rallying patriotic Americans through the foundation. Since 2007, the organization has provided over 45,000 scholarships to spouses and children of fallen or disabled military.
The 54-hole tournament will take place at the historic American Dunes Golf Club, playing 7,128 yards at a par 72. The course is highlighted by the 594-yard par-five 13th, followed behind by hole 15, a challenging 220-yard par 3. Designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, the property is located on the east shore of Lake Michigan and is covered with sand and various obstacles throughout the course.Â
Broin, who competed in the tournament a season ago, returned to Kansas for his final season of eligibility. Last season, Broin had an 18-hole scoring average of 72.59, good for third on the team. Last year at American Dunes, Broin finished in a tie for 24th at five over par. Broin was busy in the off-season, most notably competing in the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst Golf Resort, where he made the cut and finished tied for 70th.Â
King is another Jayhawk that competed in the Folds of Honor last season. King was a key member of the Jayhawk squad a season ago, competing in all 13 events with a scoring average of 72.24 over 37 rounds. King held the second-lowest scoring average on the team last season.
Jelinek returns to the team for his sophomore season, making his debut at the Folds of Honor Collegiate. Jelinek got his Jayhawk career off to a great start, as he finished in a tie for second at the Gopher Invitational with a score of eight under par. Jelinek carded five rounds in the 60's last season and carried a scoring average of 73.20.
Honner, a junior transfer from South Dakota State, joined the Jayhawks in June after a historic sophomore season for the Jackrabbits. Honner set the single season scoring average in 2023-24 with a 72.20 average and was a member of the Summit League All-Tournament Team the same year. Honner also posted six rounds in the 60's and 15 rounds of par or better in 2023-24 and will look to be a key addition to Bermel's lineup.
Holtzman is set to make his debut in the Jayhawk starting lineup after competing in four events as an individual last season. Holtzman's freshman season in 2023-24 was highlighted by an eighth-place finish at the Sea Island Invitational, posting a four-over par score for the tournament.
