LAWRENCE, Kan. — No. 15 Kansas volleyball hits the road this week, traveling to Houston for a Big 12 matchup on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. CT inside the Fertitta Center. The match will stream live on ESPN+.
The Jayhawks (13–7, 4–2 Big 12) enter the contest riding a three-match win streak which includes back-to-back home victories over Texas Tech and Iowa State last week. Kansas swept the Red Raiders in straight sets before taking down the Cyclones, 3–1, behind a balanced offensive performance and a career night from setter
Katie Dalton, who recorded a career-high 55 assists.
"We've continued to grow every week, and I love the direction this group is heading," Kansas head coach
Matt Ulmer said. "Our balance offensively and our consistency at the net have really started to come together. Houston is a talented team that plays with a lot of energy, so we'll need to stay disciplined and keep our focus on our side of the court."
Kansas has been one of the most consistent and well-rounded teams in the Big 12 this season, leading the league and ranking second nationally in total blocks (203.0). Middle blocker
Reese Ptacek continues to anchor the front line with 88 blocks on the year, while
Aurora Papac ranks second on the team with 83. On the defensive end, libero
Ryan White has been a stabilizing force in the back row, ranking fourth in the Big 12 with 305 digs, an average of 3.86 per set, for the year.
Offensively,
Jovana Zelenovic and
Rhian Swanson have paced the Jayhawks' attack, each averaging more than 3.0 kills per set. Zelenovic, who posted 23 kills and eight aces across two matches last week, has also emerged as one of the team's top servers. Kansas ranks third in the Big 12 in total aces (108), with Zelenovic (14) and
Grace Nelson (18) leading the charge from the service line.
Houston, meanwhile, looks to bounce back after a challenging stretch in Big 12 play. The Cougars, in their second season as league members, sit at 1–5 in conference play. Thursday's matchup marks the first-ever meeting between Kansas and Houston in Texas, with the Jayhawks leading the all-time series 3–1 after winning last year's contest in Lawrence, 3–1.
Kansas has appeared in the AVCA Top 25 for seven consecutive weeks and remains one of six Big 12 programs currently receiving votes or ranked nationally. The Jayhawks will look to extend their winning streak and build momentum as they approach the midway point of conference play.
