LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas cross country is set to host the 2025 Big 12 Championships this Friday, October 31st, at
Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas. The men's
8K championship race is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. while the women are slated to start the
championship 6K at 11:00 a.m.
Kansas was last in action on October 17th at the Pre-National Invitational in Columbia, Mo. where the men's team placed 15th and the women's team took 32nd. The teams battled against some of the best competition in the country with Reagan Kibet and Emmah Jemutai leading the way for the Jayhawks, placing 33rd and 42nd, respectively.
The Jayhawks will now turn their attention back home, where they get to host the Big 12 championships for the first time since 2020 and fourth time overall.
"It's great to be at home. I hope it's great to have the fans come and support the team," Kansas head coach
Stanley Redwine said, "For the athletes, I think that's phenomenal… it motivates the athletes to do better and I'm excited for our athletes to compete."
While the course has changed from Kansas' first race, the Bob Timmons Classic, the Jayhawks are still hoping the familiarity of the course and fan support can help elevate the race and promote an exciting atmosphere.
"Knowing that we're going to have the support of the home crowd is huge." Kansas assistant head cross country coach Michael Whittlesey said. "Knowing the course as well as we do, and the nuances that it has is going to have a good, big advantage for us. The team obviously is just excited about being able to race at their home course."
In the week four USTFCCCA poll, the Kansas men's team climbed three spots to 10th in the Midwest Region, while the women's team remained unranked.
Both teams will go up against firm competition this Friday, with the Big 12 controlling the top of the USTFCCCA coaches national rankings, including the #1 ranked team for both the men's and women's teams.
On the men's side, ten USTFCCCA regionally ranked teams will compete, including #1 Iowa State, #2 Oklahoma State, #5 Colorado and #8 BYU.
The women will compete against 13 regionally ranked teams, including six Top-30 nationally ranked teams in #1 BYU, #6 Iowa State, #7 West Virginia, #11 Oklahoma State, #16 Colorado and #18 Utah.
In addition to the competitive field, the course will prove a challenge for the teams, and shape up to be a great race across the board.
"I think it is probably one of the most challenging courses…so I think what it really comes down to is the talent of the athletes." Redwine said. "Everyone has to run the hills, and hopefully it benefits us, but it's going to be a challenging meet regardless. Some of the best teams in the nation are in this conference, so that's what's going to make it a special meet."
