San Marcos, Texas – The Kansas Jayhawks completed a perfect 3-0 run at the San Marcos Classic, capping the weekend with a thrilling 2-1 extra-innings victory over the Southern Illinois Salukis on Monday.
"We stayed focused and kept grinding, earning a big win against strong competition," Head Coach
Jennifer McFalls said. "These RPI wins will help us down the road. We need to improve against quality pitching, stay disciplined at the plate, and execute our short game when needed. Looking ahead, we have five games next weekend, including two against OU, which will be a great opportunity to see where we stand."
Junior
Olivia Bruno took the mound for Kansas, navigating early challenges as SIU placed runners on first and third in the opening inning. Demonstrating composure, Bruno escaped the jam unscathed.
In the top of the second, the Jayhawks faced a bases-loaded situation with only one out. The defense remained steadfast, executing plays to end the inning and maintain the scoreless tie.
In the fourth inning, Kansas junior
September Flanagan delivered a double into the left-center gap, positioning herself in scoring position. Despite the scoring opportunity, Kansas couldn't bring Flanagan home, and the game remained 0-0.
SIU broke the deadlock in the fifth inning, pushing a run across to take a 1-0 lead. The Jayhawks' defense tightened, preventing further damage and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
In the top of the seventh, Bruno showcased her versatility by leading off with a double to right field. Sophomore
Madi Hays entered as a pinch-runner, and senior
Anna Soles delivered a clutch hit to left-center, driving in Hays to tie the game at 1-1.
Bruno continued her stellar performance in the circle, retiring SIU in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Kansas began the eighth inning with freshman
Bailey Weber on second base. Sophomore
Aynslee Linduff stepped up under pressure, delivering a crucial hit over the shortstop to bring Weber home, giving the Jayhawks their first lead at 2-1.
The defense sealed the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning. After two quick outs, Flanagan secured the final out by catching a foul ball, clinching the 2-1 win and preserving Kansas' undefeated record in the tournament. Bruno's complete-game performance was instrumental, allowing just one run over eight innings while contributing offensively with a pivotal double in the seventh inning.
