LAWRENCE, Kan. – Following 20 games away from Lawrence to start the season, the Kansas softball team will host Wichita State in its home season opener at Arrocha Ballpark on Wednesday, March 12. The contest will start at 5 p.m. Central and will be televised on ESPN+.
The Jayhawks (12-8, 2-1 Big 12) are coming off an impressive series win against Baylor, securing a 2-1 series victory in their first Big 12 matchup of the season. Kansas capped off the series with a dominant 12-2 (6 inn.) win over the Bears on March 9 in Waco, Texas.
"We are all really excited to finally play at home and have great weather," Kansas head coach
Jennifer McFalls said. "I think coming off Sunday's game and winning the first conference series of the season helped our confidence. Wichita State is a solid team that knows how to win, and every game is always a dog fight. It should be a great home opener."
Kansas opened the Baylor road trip with a tightly contested 3-2 loss in extra innings, where sophomore
Anna Soles led the team with two hits. The Jayhawks bounced back in game two, winning 3-2, thanks to senior
Olivia Bruno, who pitched 6.2 innings with four strikeouts. The series finale saw Kansas' bats come alive, with a 12-run game, improving its record to 12-8 overall.
At the plate, junior
Aynslee Linduff has been the most consistent hitter for Kansas, leading the team with a .397 batting average, 25 hits, and 14 runs scored. Junior
Hailey Cripe has provided power in the lineup, driving in a team-high 15 RBIs while hitting .375 with two home runs. Bruno has also been a key contributor offensively, leading the team with four home runs and adding 13 RBIs. On the mound, junior
Lizzy Ludwig has been the most reliable arm for the Jayhawks, posting a 2.50 ERA across 33.2 innings pitched in 10 appearances. Freshman
Kaelee Washington has also been a force in the circle, leading the team with 20 strikeouts in 28.1 innings of work.
