
Jayhawks Start the Weekend Strong with 4-1 Win Over Houston on Friday

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas women's tennis team picked up a strong 4-1 victory over the Houston Cougars at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility in Houston, Texas on Friday.
With the win, the Jayhawks improve to 9-6 and 3-2 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Cougars fall to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the Big 12.
Kansas took an early match advantage in doubles play as Houston forfeited court three. On court two, Kansas' duo of Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Jasmine Adams improved to 3-0 on the season as they defeated Houston's Sophie Schouten and Gaby Cortes, 6-4. Court one went unfinished as KU's Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse van Vuuren trailed, 5-4.
With a 1-0 lead in singles play, the Jayhawks continued their momentum as sophomore Kyoka Kubo notched a straight-set victory over Houston's Heta Nuutinen, 6-1, 6-1. The win improved Kubo to 8-6 in singles play this season.
Houston struck back with its first point on court five as Schouten defeated Adams, 6-4, 6-0. The Jayhawks extended their lead to 3-1 moments later when van Vuuren put together a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-3 over Valeriia Krokhotina.
With a 3-1 lead, Mulville continued her success this season with her fourth ranked win by defeating Santa Strombacha in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The win improved Mulville's overall record to 10-4 in singles this season, while clinching the match against Houston.
On court six, Arystanbekova held an early third set lead over Cortes of Houston, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0, while Kansas' Maria Titova trailed Iva Sepa on court two, 7-6 (6), 3-4.
