TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 22 Kansas baseball heads on the road for four games in Arizona this week, beginning with a non-conference matchup at No. 23 Arizona on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT. Each Big 12 team does not play three conference opponents in league action this season, making Tuesday a non-conference game.
Â
"We are looking forward to competing against another great opponent in the University of Arizona," head coach
Dan Fitzgerald said. "We are off to a good start but still have a long way to go."
Â
Kansas is off to its best 20-game start in program history with a 17-3 record. The Jayhawks have won each of their first five weekend series to begin the season for the first time since 2003 (minimum three-game series).
Â
This week, the Jayhawks are ranked No. 22 by the National College Baseball Writers Association. The ranking is the first for Kansas since the 2014 season.
Â
Kansas took two out of three games from Baylor this past weekend. KU has now won its opening conference series in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2013 and 2014. The Jayhawks outscored the Bears 30-17 and hit nine home runs over the weekend.
Â
Through 20 games, Kansas leads the Big 12 and is third in the nation with 46 home runs this season. Kansas has hit multiple home runs in 12 games this season. The Jayhawks tied a program record with seven home runs at Minnesota on March 12, which included tying the NCAA record for most consecutive home runs with five.
Â
Arizona (15-4, 3-0 Big 12) enters the week ranked No. 23 by Baseball America. The Wildcats swept Cincinnati this past weekend in Tucson and have won eight straight games. After starting the season 0-3, Arizona has gone 15-1 since the opening weekend of the season. The Wildcats are hitting .311 as a team and the pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.81.
