
Kansas Heads to Battle on the Bayou

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Kansas Track & Field team will continue their outdoor season in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as the Jayhawks will take part in the Battle on the Bayou on March 28th & 29th.Â
The Jayhawks are sending 32 men and 24 women for the two-day event, with their first event, women's pole vault, kicking off at 2 p.m. on Friday. Four different Jayhawks are slated to compete in the event for Kansas. Running events will get underway at 5:30 p.m. with the women's 400m hurdles, where two Jayhawks will compete in the opening running events for the weekend.Â
"I thought that last week was a great opener. It made for a good transition from the indoor season to the outdoor season. We will have great competition from several SEC schools this weekend. I hope that it will better prepare us for our upcoming Kansas Relays, Big 12's and NCAA championships," said Kansas Head Coach Stanley Redwine.Â
Some other Jayhawks competing this weekend include Senior Captain Clayton Simms, who is a native of Louisiana and will compete in the pole vault. Simms is the Big 12 Indoor Pole Vault Champion and he took home a runner-up finish last year at the Battle of the Bayou in the pole vault. Junior Grant Lockwood from Kansas City, Kan. will be competing in the 800m & 4x400m. Graduate Student TJ Robinson will compete in the 800m, where at the Big 12 Indoor Championships he took home 4th place in that event.Â
Mason Meinershagen will be competing in the pole vault after coming off a 4th place finish at the NCAA Indoor Nationals. Meinenshagen took 5th in the pole vault last year at the Battle of the Bayou as Erica Ellis took home a 3rd-place finish. They will join the rest of the Kansas Women's Pole Vault team this weekend as they are currently the No. 1 Women's Pole Vault team in the country in the latest USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings. Sophomore Emmaculate Jemutai will be competing in the 800m & 1500m, last year she took home a 4th place finish at the Battle of the Bayou. Senior Aaliyah Moore who will run in the 800m, Moore who took home a 3rd place finish last year at this event and also ran in the same event at the NCAA Outdoor Nationals last season.
