LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas Track & Field team opened its outdoor season Saturday at Rock Chalk Park with the Jayhawk Spring Fling in Lawrence. The Jayhawks won nine events, with 25 top three finishes and 18 personal bests on their way to finishing first on the women's side with 127 points and second on the men's side with 89 points.
"Having an opportunity to compete at home is always great, especially with the weather, you couldn't ask for better," Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine said. "We were excited about both the field events and track events today, I thought we did a great job."
The Jayhawks started the morning in the field as senior
Charli Foreman picked up Kansas' first win of the day in the women's long jump.
Brenna Schwada finished second in the women's triple jump with a personal best 10.76 meters.
Kansas then swept the podium in the hammer throw, with Barbora Stejfova, Kat Meacham and Addie Cline finishing with top throws of 62.60, 50.56 and 50.47 meters, respectively. The marks were personal bests for Meacham and Cline, and made the trio the fourth, ninth and tenth best performers for Kansas all-time.Â
Weston Van Camp then finished second in the men's hammer throw before Mason Meinershagen and Madison Snody finished first and second in the women's pole vault, clearing 4.45 and 4.25 meters. Meinershagen's vault tied the fifth highest outdoor mark in KU history.
Sky Hagan got things underway on the track, quickly establishing herself in the record books as the fifth best Kansas performer in the 100 meter hurdles in her first event as a Jayhawk, finishing in 13.37 seconds. Aaron Merritt then ran a personal best 13.87 seconds 110 meter hurdles, good for ninth best performer.Â
Kaleigh Frazier and Devan Mathis both finished third for Kansas in the women's and men's 400 meter hurdles before a plethora of Jayhawks ran in the 200 meter dash. Sidney Smith led the way for the women, finishing third with a personal best 200 meters time of 24.67 seconds before Merritt set another personal best with a time of 21.60 to finish third.
Madison Campbell and Jackson Belding got their outdoor seasons underway with third place finishes in the 400 meter dash while Bryce Barkdull tied his personal best in the men's pole vault to finish as the top collegiate athlete, clearing 5.55 meters.Â
Meacham picked up another second place finish in the discus, throwing 46.65 meters while Stejfova finished ninth.Van Camp and Dimitrios Antonatos wrapped up the field events with fifth and sixth place finishes in the men's discus, with it being both of their first times competing collegiately in the event.Â
The Jayhawks closed with four wins on the track, beginning with Abree Winfrey taking home the gold in the women's 800 meter run after a ten second personal best run. Bethany Druse then won the women's 1,500 meter run before Ethel Amissh, Sidney Smith, Lillian Harris and Winfrey won the 4x400 meter relay.
Grant Lockwood, Tristan Williams, Michael Joseph and Jack Markstrom then closed the day in dramatic fashion with a come from behind win in the men's 4x400 meter relay.
"You always want a starting point so that you know where to go, and what we're looking for as coaches is to help identify weaknesses to get those things better and that's what we did; it was a great day and it told us a lot," Redwine concluded.
