
Jayhawks Shine at Battle on the Bayou

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Kansas Track & Field team competed in the Battle on the Bayou this weekend, where three Jayhawks took home first place in their respective events.Â
"The weekend showed good progress for the team, we had several highly ranked national results. There is still much room for improvement and we have to continue to work hard," Kansas Head Coach Stanley Redwine said.On Friday, sophomore Mason Meinershagen kicked off the weekend for Kansas as she took first in the Women's Pole Vault with a mark of 4.50m (14-9 ft.), a new meet record. Also in the Women's Pole Vault Erica Ellis & Gabby Hoke tied for second place with a mark of 4.25m (13-11.25 ft.). Up next for the Jayhawks was the Men's Pole Vault where Clayton Simms, a Louisiana native took 2nd place, and Freshman Bryce Barkdull took 3rd, both with the same mark of 5.40m (17-8.5 ft.). Freshman Kori Randle took 4th in the Women's Long Jump with a distance of 6.17m (20-3 ft.).Â
Kansas had many PRs on Friday, starting with freshman Brooke Freeman in the Women's 200m running a time of 23.98. Emmaculate Jemutai took 5th in the Women's 1500m with a time of 4:16.54, and in the Men's 1500m Quenton Walion, Ryo Higuchi, Parker Walion & Samuel Trumble all ran PR times. Walion also took 4th in the event. Â
Saturday started with more of the same, with more Jayhawks taking first place. Junior Sofia Sluchaninova took home the Women's Discus as she threw a distance of 55.65m(182-7 ft.), Madeleine Fey also took 4th in the event with a mark of 54.05m(177-4 ft.). Sophomore Jacob Cookinham finished 3rd in the Men's Shot Put with a PR mark of 18.79m(61-9.75 ft.). Kansas had the top two finishers in the Women's 800m with Emmaculate Jemutai taking first with a PR time of 2:04.17, and Aaliyah Moore running a time of 2:04.93.Â
Many Jayhawks recorded new PRs on Saturday, starting with freshman Dimitrios Antonatos in the Men's Shot Put with a mark of 17.51m(57-5.5 ft.), Quenton Walion, Tanner Talley & Parker Walion set new PRs in the Men's 800m running times of 1:50.26, 1:50.33, & 1:54.27 respectively. The last PR of the day was from freshman Jackson Belding in the Men's 400m running a time of 47.24. Weather canceled the rest of the meet Saturday afternoon.Â
