WACO, Texas – The Kansas softball team is set to open Big 12 play with a three-game series against Baylor from March 7-9 at Getterman Stadium.
Kansas enters conference play with momentum after a 3-2 weekend at the Oklahoma Tournament in Norman. The Jayhawks secured dominant wins over Marshall and East Texas A&M while battling hard against top-ranked Oklahoma.
"Baylor is always a strong team and a tough opponent. They're really well-coached, and playing on their turf is always a challenge. They have a great fan base, and they draw well," Kansas head coach
Jennifer McFalls said. "I think the biggest thing right now is that our team is playing with a lot of confidence. Getting the sweep against them at home last year was huge for us, and it really boosted our belief in ourselves. Now, I think our team is starting to realize, 'Hey, we're pretty darn good.' This is a great opening challenge for us in the Big 12. I think we match up well with them, and we've got a strong chance to go down there and take care of business."
The Jayhawks opened the tournament with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Marshall, highlighted by Junior
Hailey Cripe's perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, which included two runs scored. In the nightcap, Kansas faced No. 1 Oklahoma, falling 9-1.
Saturday saw a historic performance, as Kansas posted a record-breaking 23-0 win over East Texas A&M in just five innings, marking the largest margin of victory in program history. The Jayhawks racked up 17 Â hits, with seven different players recording multi-hit games. Freshman
Ava Wallace went 2-for-2 with seven RBIs, including a grand slam. Kansas finished the day with a second matchup against Oklahoma but was shut out 8-0.
Kansas closed out the weekend with an extra-inning thriller against Marshall, securing a 4-3 walk-off win. With
Emma Tatum in scoring position at third base and one out,
Campbell Bagshaw stepped up to the plate and delivered a hard hit ball to the infield that brought Tatum home, secure the win.
At the plate this season, Kansas is led by junior
Aynslee Linduff and junior
Presley Limbaugh, who both have batting averages above .400. Linduff leads the team in hits with 26 and has scored 20 runs. On the mound, junior
Lizzy Ludwig has logged the most innings pitched for the Jayhawks while maintaining a 2.68 ERA.Â
Kansas will now shift focus to its Big 12 opener against Baylor (10-10), looking to carry its offensive firepower into Waco.
