LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 23 Kansas baseball avenged its loss to Nebraska from two weeks ago with a 4-0 victory on the road at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. The Jayhawks used six pitchers to secure their fourth shutout of the season.
Â
Kansas has won five consecutive games and has now surpassed its win total from the 2024 season with a 32-10 overall record this season. The Jayhawks have their most wins in a season under third-year head coach
Dan Fitzgerald and the most wins since 2019.
Â
Thaniel Trumper made his first career start for the Jayhawks and pitched two scoreless frames. Following Trumper,
Malakai Vetock pitched an inning,
Manning West and
Dalton Smith each pitched two innings, and
Eric Lin and
Alex Breckheimer each pitched one inning to close it out.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nebraska (19-22) had runners on first and third with one out in the first inning, but a double caught stealing got the Jayhawks out of the inning without allowing a run.
• Kansas was able to strike first with two runs in the second inning.
Dariel Osoria walked to start the inning and
Brady Counsell doubled to set up two runners in scoring position with one out.
Tommy Barth came up next and sent a ball back up the middle and into center field to score two runs. That gave Kansas a 2-0 lead.
• The teams would both be scoreless for the next for the next four innings until the seventh.
• With two outs,
Brady Ballinger smoked an RBI double to right field that brought in
Derek Cerda. The run pushed the Kansas lead to 3-0.
• In the ninth, Kansas was able to pick up an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by
Sawyer Smith. That is where the scoring ended for the night.

QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
"I thought the first inning set the tone. We get ourselves in a little bit of trouble and Ian makes a great throw, Sawyer makes a great tag, he makes a great throw and Ian makes a great tag. I don't know if I've ever seen a 1-2-6-2 inning-ending double play with a double review, so that was a first. I thought there were a couple keys to it. There were parts in the lineup that we were trying to matchup. We were able to get Trumper, Manning and Dalton in those spots and then we got Vetock in the perfect spot for him to come in and throw the sweeper. It was great and then Eric and Brack were awesome. Very mature game. I thought we swung it really well and I'll have to go back and look at the barrel sheet, but we hit a bunch of balls hard. I mean Hauge hit 300 miles an hour worth of outs tonight, which was really impressive. I love the approach because it's easy to get frustrated, but they stuck with it." – Head Coach
Dan Fitzgerald
Â
"Midweeks are really important because guys who haven't thrown in a while get innings. Guys who throw all the time get innings. It's usually a Johnny Wholestaff for us and we have a bunch of arms out there. For everyone to come in and be good really early and right away come in the game and fill it up is really good and is a really good sign going forward for the team." –
Thaniel Trumper
Â
"I'm just trying to do what I can to get on base, score runs and help the team win. Whatever I can do to help the team is great." –
Sawyer Smith
