Lawrence, Kan. – The Kansas softball team dropped its opening game of a three-game series against 23rd-ranked Oklahoma State Friday night, 4-0, at Arrocha Ballpark.Â
Oklahoma State improved to 28-16 on the season and 9-8 in conference play, while the Jayhawks fell to 20-23 on the year and 5-14 in the Big 12.Â
Senior
Katie Brooks started in the circle, and the Kansas defense hit the ground running and retired Oklahoma State's first three batters of the contest. The Jayhawks defense continued to battle in the second inning, allowing only a solo home run for the first run of the game.
Kansas received its first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning from a single by senior
Olivia Bruno, who ended up reaching second on an error. The Jayhawks were unable to capitalize on a runner in scoring position and entered the third inning down 1-0.Â
The Jayhawks got back on track in the third inning. In the field, the KU defense kept OSU from recording a hit as the offense started to heat up. Junior
Presley Limbaugh recorded her team-leading 52nd hit of the season as three other Jayhawks got on base in the inning. Kansas could not put any runs on the scoreboard to end the inning, however.
The Cowgirls recorded three runs on one hit to extend their lead to 4-0, in the top of the fourth and the Jayahwks were unable to answer. Brooks, however, grabbed her first strikeout of the game in the inning for her 35th strikeout of the season.Â
Brooks, who notched her third complete game of the season, recorded her second strikeout of the evening in the fifth inning and the Kansas defense held Oklahoma State scoreless for the remainder of the game. The strikeout in the fifth was Brooks' 199th of her career, needing just one more to reach the 200-mark.
The Jayhawk offense couldn't solve OSU starter Ruby Meylan, who improved to 18-6 on the season.
