LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas softball team is set to host UCF for its final home series of the season, May 2-4, at Arrocha Ballpark. The three-game Big 12 matchup marks Senior Weekend for the Jayhawks as they celebrate the final home games for their veteran leaders.
Kansas (22-24, 6-15 Big 12) enters the weekend on a two-game win streak after defeating No. 23 Oklahoma State on April 27 and earning a dramatic 5-3 extra-inning victory over in-state rival Wichita State on April 30.
"I'm proud of the way we've competed lately. We've had players step up and show real toughness," said head coach Jennifer McFalls. "UCF is a solid team right above us in the Big 12, so it's going to be a competitive series. If we stay locked in and keep playing together, we'll give ourselves a great shot to finish strong at home."Â
In their last conference series, the Jayhawks grabbed a signature win over the nationally ranked Cowgirls in the finale game, closing the series with a 3-2 upset behind strong pitching and clutch defense. Kansas carried that momentum into its midweek battle in Wichita, where senior leadership again paved the way.
Against the Shockers, senior Olivia Bruno started in the circle and delivered 6.2 strong innings, while fellow senior Katie Brooks shut the door with a dominant relief outing. Brooks recorded five strikeouts over 2.1 innings and earned the win, her team-leading eighth of the season. The Jayhawks showed resilience, regaining the lead three times (second, sixth, and ninth innings) before sealing the 5-3 win with an RBI double from Natalie Marshall and an RBI single by Presley Limbaugh in the top of the ninth.
Bruno and Brooks have anchored the Kansas pitching staff throughout the season. Bruno leads the team in ERA (2.85), complete games (5), and strikeouts (44), while Brooks leads in wins (8), starts (14), and innings pitched (78.2). The rotation also features junior Lizzy Ludwig and freshmen Kaelee Washington and Kennedy Diggs. Washington has appeared in a team-high 22 games and owns the second-best ERA (3.88).
Offensively, Kansas continues to rely on the consistency of Bruno, Hailey Cripe, and Limbaugh. Limbaugh paces the team in batting average (.377), hits (55), doubles (10), triples (2), and runs scored (36). Bruno has powered the lineup with 11 home runs and a team-high 39 RBIs, while batting .310. Cripe has been equally impactful, ranking second in average (.349), hits (45), home runs (9), and RBIs (33).
