LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas cross country is set to begin its 2025 campaign at the Bob Timmons Classic on Saturday, Aug. 30, at
Rim Rock Farm. The men are scheduled to begin the 6K at 9 a.m., with the women starting the 5K shortly after at 9:45 a.m.
"We're excited for the season to start and get out on the track," Kansas assistant head coach Michael Whittlesey said when asked about the opening meet. "On the men's side we're going to run some of our younger guys to give them more responsibility for the overall team score, which we're excited about. For the women we are going to run our top runners and hope both teams will come together and have a strong day."
Both Kansas teams are looking to repeat their first place finish from last season's Bob Timmons Classic. The men won by an astounding 35 points over second place Oral Roberts, while the women won by 13 over Kansas State. The men's team is looking to bring home its fifth-straight win at the Bob Timmons Classic since 2020, as they enter the season ranked eighth in the USTFCCCA Midwest Region.
The Jayhawks this year are set to return a high percentage of last season's roster. Two top ten finishers from last season's Bob Timmons Classic will be competing this Saturday. Tori Wingrove, who finished fourth, and
Ryo Higuchi, who placed eighth, are set to lead Kansas among a handful of other returners.
For the men, Hobbs Campbell,
Lenny Njoroge,
Andrew Schumacher,
Nathan Thengvall,
Parker Walion and
Ryan Whittlesey will be making their season debut, while newcomer
Paul Ngasharr will be making his Kansas debut.
Samuel Trumble and
Blake Wohler are also returning, but will run unattached with
Reagan Kibet.
Representing the women alongside Tori Wingrove are returners
Bethany Druse,
Laya Erickson,
Emmaculate Jemutai,
Olivia Krueger,
Mia Murray,
Sydney Owens and
Kaitlyn Swartz.
Irine Jepkirui will be making her collegiate cross country debut, and freshman
Naomi Hunter will be running unattached.
"We want to run strong at the conference meet and believe we have some runners that can compete well in conference and move forward into the regionals and even beyond," Whittlesey added.
