LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 17 Kansas (6-4) travels to Wichita State (6-2) on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for an in-state volleyball matchup at Charles Koch Arena. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT, with live coverage available on ESPN+.
Kansas holds a 45-13 all-time record against the Shockers and the Jayhawks have won eight of the last nine matchups. KU is 8-4 versus WSU in the last 12 meetings in Wichita.
The Jayhawks have excelled both at home and on the road, consistently winning in neutral-site contests, and enter this matchup with momentum from a dominant weekend at the Coyote Invitational.
"With the last week of non-conference opponents, we are hopeful to continue building better habits to prepare for Big 12 play," Kansas head coach
Matt Ulmer said. "Wichita State is playing at a high level, and we are looking forward to the challenge."
Last week, Kansas swept Florida Gulf Coast, Green Bay, and host South Dakota in straight sets at the Coyote Invitational, marking the first time this season the Jayhawks were able to close out matches without dropping a set. This comes after opening the year with four consecutive five-set battles.
Senior outside hitter
Rhian Swanson has led the Jayhawks offensively with 127 kills and a 3.53 kills per set average, posting double-digit kills in seven of nine matches, including a season-high 22 against Purdue. Sophomore middle blocker
Reese Ptacek has been a defensive anchor at the net, ranking No. 1 in the Big 12 with 44 total blocks, while senior libero
Ryan White has paced the back row with a team-high 147 digs, averaging 3.5 per set.
Collectively, Kansas has recorded 542 kills, ranking third in the nation and first in the Big 12, while also accumulating 502 assists, which places them fourth nationally and first in the conference. The Jayhawks have also totaled 99 blocks, ranking sixth nationally and among the top ten in the country.
After Tuesday's road test at Wichita State, Kansas will remain on the road to compete in the Omaha Tournament, where the Jayhawks will face Omaha, South Florida, and No. 18 Creighton for the second time this season.
