LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas Track & Field team is set to compete in two final indoor meets this weekend before the Big 12 Championship next week on Friday, Feb. 27-28. The Jayhawks will send a large group to the Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track in Manhattan, Kansas to compete in the Steve Miller Invite on Friday, Feb. 19. Five athletes are scheduled to compete at Saucony's Battle for Boston at BU on Sunday, Feb. 22.
The meets will mark two of the final three opportunities to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, March 13-14. Kansas will look to string together some top performances to build upon its already strong season.
According to the USTFCCCA rankings, the Jayhawks currently have seven top 25 event groups and the top ranked heptathlon group, the second best men's pole vault group, the 19th best male milers, the 22nd best men's long jumpers, the 23rd ranked men's high jumpers and the 25th best men's 800 meters group.
As a team, Kansas is ranked nationally as the No. 30 men's team and No. 68 women's team.
"For those competing this weekend it's a great chance to score well in these final competition opportunities," Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine said. "Hopefully we will get some great performances that will boost confidence going into the Big 12 Championships."
Events are scheduled to begin Friday with the women's pole vault at 1:45 p.m. The women's 60 meter hurdles preliminaries will kick off the track events at 3:30 p.m.
Field events will continue with the men's high jump at 2 p.m., women's long jump at 2:45 p.m., women's weight throw at 3:15 p.m., men's shot put at 4:45 p.m., men's pole vault and women's triple jump at 5 p.m., and women's high jump at 6:15 p.m., before the women's shot put wraps things up at 6:30 p.m.
The track events will be run with the men competing in the 60 meter hurdles with preliminaries at 3:40 p.m., and finals at 4:30 p.m., the 400 meters at 5 p.m. and the 1,000 meter run at 5:55 p.m.
In addition to the women's 60 meter hurdles, the Kansas women will run in the 400 meters at 4:45 p.m. and the 200 meters at 6:25 p.m.
