LAWRENCE, Kan. –Kansas women's tennis dropped a close 4-2 match to Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Kansas dropped to 4-5 this season, while Old Dominion improved to 2-4 on the year.
"We got out-competed today, and that's always disappointing to see as a coach," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "We start Big 12 play on Friday against Texas Tech, and we look to see more effort from the team to start conference play."Â
The Jayhawks started off the match strong yet once again, winning the doubles point for the third-straight match by winning courts two and three. Court two finished first, as Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty defeated Ulyana Romanova and Lidiia Rasskouskaia 6-3 to improve to 3-1 on the season. Kansas took the doubles point with a win on court three, with Kinley VanPelt and Meriem Ben Ezzedine winning their first match of the season against Marina Markina and Uladzislava Manzhous 6-4.
Old Dominion took one doubles match on court one, as Kira Matushkina and Victoria Matasova defeated Kansas' Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina 6-3.
The Monarchs responded by taking four singles matches on courts three, four, five and six to take the match from the Jayhawks. In order, Romanova defeated Ben Ezzedine 6-1, 6-3; Manzhos defeated McCarty 6-4, 6-2; Markina defeated Nahyeong Cho 6-2, 6-2; and Rasskouskaia defeated VanPelt 6-3, 6-2.
On court two, Arystanbekova picked up a nationally ranked win by defeating No. 98 Matasova in straight-sets 6-4, 6-0. van Vuuren was featured on court one, and was in a tight 6-3, 3-6, 2-3 match before it went unfinished.
UP NEXT Kansas will open Big 12 Conference play on Friday, February 27 by hosting Texas Tech at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 5 p.m. CT.
