LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women's tennis dropped a hard fought 4-1 match to No. 23 Texas Tech on Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
"I thought we gave good effort tonight," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "At the end of the day, when you're playing a top-25 team in the country, you have to be consistent in your competitiveness. I think we allowed Texas Tech to be a little too streaky today and didn't stop their runs fast enough."
Kansas dropped to 4-6 this season, while No. 23 Texas Tech improved to 10-3 on the year.
In doubles action, Texas Tech took matches on courts one and three to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match. On court one, No. 75 Hailey Murphy and Kate Dmitrichenko defeated Kansas' Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina 6-2, and on court three, Texas Tech's Polina Sleptsova and Ella Brownback took down Kinley VanPelt and Meriem Ben Ezzedine 6-4. Court two went unfinished, as Texas Tech's Mariia Hlahola and Elena Daskalova were leading Kansas' Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty 6-5.
The Lady Raiders kept momentum in singles play, winning the first two matches on courts six and three to take a 3-0 lead. On court six, Brownback defeated Putilina 6-2, 6-2, and on court three, Hlahola defeated Ben Ezzedine 6-4, 6-3.
Kansas found a win on court one to pick up their first point of the day, as van Vuuren took down Murphy in a tight 7-6 (3), 6-4 win to cut the lead to 3-1.
Court two was the winning court for Texas Tech, where Arystanbekova's comeback attempt fell short in a 6-3, 7-6 (7) loss to Dmitrichenko to give the Lady Raiders the 4-1 win.
Courts four and five went unfinished, as Sleptsova was leading the match over McCarty 4-6, 6-3, 3-2 on court four and Daskalova led Cho 6-1, 1-6, 5-4 on court five.
