LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women's tennis swept No. 74 Colorado in a dominant 4-0 match at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The win is the Jayhawks' first conference win of the season after falling to No. 23 Texas Tech, 4-1, Friday in their league opener.
"I thought we responded well and bounced back after a tough match on Friday," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "I think it's been the best fight and response I've seen in our team all season. And so from that standpoint, that's the most important part. The tennis isn't always going to be your best or the prettiest, but it's competing and playing your hardest every single point, and I felt like we did that as a team today."
Kansas improved to 5-6 (1-1 Big 12) this season, while Colorado dropped to 9-3 (1-1 Big 12) on the year. The win is Kansas' second ranked win of the season, with both coming in Lawrence. KU defeated No. 53 Minnesota, 5-2, on Feb. 20.
In the Colorado win, the Jayhawks found early momentum in doubles action, winning courts one and three to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. On court one, Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina picked up their fourth win of the season by defeating Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec 6-4. Kinley VanPelt and Meriem Ben Ezzedine won the doubles point on court three by taking down Lani Brotman and Anya Nelson 7-5.Â
Colorado grabbed one doubles win on court two, as Rixt van der Werff and Lera Alexin defeated Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty 6-4.
The strong start carried into singles play for the Jayhawks, as Kansas took three straight matches to take the match in a 4-0 sweep. On court one, van Vuuren won her fourth match out of her last five outings, taking down El Sayed in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3. Court three finished next, with Ben Ezzedine defeating Rebec in another straight-set match, 6-4, 6-3. The match was won on court five, as Nahyeong Cho picked up a 7-5, 6-3 match over Alexin.
Three matches went unfinished but were all led by Kansas, with Arystanbekova leading van der Werff 6-0, 5-7, 1-0; McCarty leading Brotman 5-7, 6-3, 1-0; and Putilina leading Nelson 2-6, 6-2, 3-0.
