LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 37 Kansas tennis team closed out the regular season home slate with a 4-0 sweep over Cincinnati on Senior Day at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The sweep is the third straight for the Jayhawks.
With the win, Kansas improved to 12-9 on the season and 7-4 in Big 12 play. Cincinnati dropped to 7-12 on the season and 1-10 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks have 11 home wins this year, which is the most since the 2021-22 season, when KU reached 12 home wins.
"Senior days are always hard," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "There's a lot of emotions, there's a lot of feelings, there's a lot of expectations, not only of your senior, but also of their teammates wanting to be at their best on that day. I thought we managed it pretty well today. It wasn't perfect, but it's never going to be perfect in these situations, and also, the conditions were the greatest, and the girls found a way to be competitive and find a way to get the job done."
"Just a great day for Heike, I thought she played really well, Chapman continued. "I thought she played composed, and she's just been playing really solid tennis this whole spring. It was great for her to be able to celebrate her day that way."
Kansas jumped to a quick 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point in decisive fashion. On court three, the pair of Kyoka Kubo and Meriem Ben Ezzedine moved to 8-3 on the season with a dominant 6-2 win over Milica Popovski and Morgan Pyrz. The duo of senior Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty picked up their team-leading 10th win of the season by defeating Gabrielle Guenther and Tara Kurepa 6-3 to grant Kansas the doubles point.
Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina matched up against Rozalia Gruszczynska and Sakurako Watanabe on court one in a tightly contested 4-4 battle, but the match went unfinished.
The Jayhawks carried their momentum into singles play, grabbing three straight-set victories to take the match in a 4-0 win. On court two, senior van Vuuren closed out her senior day with a win over Gruszczynska 6-3, 6-1 to win her 10th dual match of the season. Court one finished up next, as No. 67-ranked Kubo defeated Guenther in a dominant 6-1, 6-0 match to move to 11-6 on the year, which leads the team in singles wins.
