LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 48 Kansas raced out to a commanding lead against No. 19 UCF and closed out the match to take a 4-1 win over the Knights on Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The win is Kansas' fifth ranked win of the season, and the second ranked win in a row.
"I thought we fought hard in all nine spots today," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "We flipped a switch in doubles and never turned it back off. The biggest thing we talk about is that the results come from the process of handling things the right way and doing things the right way, and this weekend is a great example of that. I'm proud of the girls for the way we handled today. After a long and tough match on Friday, we came out ready to fight and compete today."
Kansas improved to 9-7 (5-2 Big 12) this season, while UCF dropped to 13-3 (6-2 Big 12). The Jayhawks also moved to 8-3 in home matches this year.
The Jayhawks had a slow start to doubles play, but were able to fight back and take two courts to win the point and a 1-0 lead. On court two, the pair of Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty moved to 7-3 this season with a quick 6-2 win over Lauren Seye and Olivia Bergler.Â
UCF took court one, as Jantje Tilbuerger and Marina Gatell defeated Kansas' Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina 6-2 to give both teams one doubles win.Â
Kansas' Kyoka Kubo and Meriem Ben Ezzedine battled against Vladislava Andreevskaya and Jade Psonka on court three, but fell behind in the match at 3-5. The pair came back to force the match to a 6-6 tiebreak, where Kubo and Ben Ezzedine dominated to win the match 7-6 (4), granting Kansas the doubles point.
The Jayhawks kept momentum going into singles play, grabbing two quick wins to push the lead to 3-0. On court four, Arystanbekova defeated Gatell in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3. McCarty faced off against Seye on court five and raced to a quick 6-2, 6-2 win. She improved to 7-4 this season in singles action.Â
The Knights picked up one point on court two, as Tilbuerger took down van Vuuren 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 for UCF's only point of the day.
Court one was the winning match for the Jayhawks, with No. 53 Kubo defeating Bergler in a three-set victory with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Two matches went unfinished, as Putilina was leading Psonka 0-6, 6-3, 5-1 on court six, and Ben Ezzedine battling Andreevskaya 5-7, 5-4 on court four.
