MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 39 Kansas women's tennis match closed out the regular season with a dominant 4-0 sweep over Kansas State in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Sunday afternoon. It is the fifth-straight win for the Jayhawks over the Wildcats.
With the win, Kansas completes the regular season with a 13-9 record, and 9-4 in the Big 12. Kansas State falls to 8-13 on the season, and 3-10 in the Big 12.Â
"I'm proud of how the ladies handled adjusting to the match time moving several times today due to the rain," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "I thought we played a really solid doubles point and then we did a great job closing out our matches on three courts."
The Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead, winning two doubles matches to lead the match 1-0 going into singles. The No. 62-ranked pair of Kyoka Kubo and Heike Janse van Vuuren moved to 5-1 on the season by taking down Sasha Kyselova and Chanel Rustemova, 6-2, on court two. Court one finished next, as Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina defeated No. 89 Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Martaa Chogsomjav, 6-2, to give Kansas the doubles point.
Court three went unfinished, with the duo of Meg McCarty and Meriem Ben Ezzedine leading their match, 5-3, against Varvara Bernovic and Diana Smolinska.
Kansas kept control of the match in singles action, picking up three quick wins to take the match with a 4-0 score. van Vuuren won her 11th singles match of the season in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kyselova on court two. Putilina improved to 7-5 this season on court six, as she defeated Addison Renfro 6-0, 6-2 to give the Jayhawks a commanding 3-0 lead.
Court four was the winning court for Kansas, as Ben Ezzedine won her second-straight match with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory over Rustemova to win the match for the Jayhawks. Kansas' last four wins have all been 4-0 sweeps.
Three matches went unfinished, as No. 67 Kubo battled Chogsomjav 6-2, 3-6, Arystanbekova led Smolinska 7-6 (5), 3-2, and Kansas State's Bernovic leading Kansas' McCarty 6-4, 4-2.
