LUBBOCK, Texas – Kansas baseball came up on the wrong side of a back-and-forth contest in a 10-9 walk-off loss on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The teams combined for 31 hits, with Kansas having 17 of the hits, but an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth by Texas Tech's Matt Quintanar proved to be the difference.
Augusto Mungarrieta,
Josh Dykhoff and
Brady Ballinger all launched home runs in the 17-hit performance by the Kansas offense. Mungarrieta, Dykhoff and
Dylan Schlotterback each finished with three hits apiece.
On the mound, the Kansas pitching staff was unable to stop the Red Raiders offense as they scored in each of the final five innings of the game.
Dominic Voegele started and allowed seven runs over 5.1 innings.
Toby Scheidt suffered the loss to move to 0-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kansas (10-8, 0-2 Big 12) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. With two outs, Mungarrieta hit a solo home run to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 advantage.
• Texas Tech (13-5, 2-0 Big 12) responded with three runs in the third inning. Two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly made it a 3-1 Texas Tech lead.
• The Jayhawks got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth. Dykhoff hit a two-out solo homer to bring it to a 3-2 ballgame.
• Kansas put up three runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead. Ballinger started the frame with a 453-foot home run over the batter's eye. That tied the game at 3-3. • Another run scored for Texas Tech in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout. That made it a 7-5 game.
• The Jayhawks continued to battle and evened the game up on an RBI infield single from
Dylan Schlotterback and a throwing error that allowed
Dariel Osoria to score. At the seventh inning stretch, the game was tied 7-7.
• Texas Tech took the lead again in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Caden Ferraro.
• Kansas tied up the game once again in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout by Osoria. The score was 8-8 in the middle of the eighth.
• Tracer Lopez broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run to center field to give Texas Tech a 9-8 edge.
• The game continued to go back-and-forth as the Jayhawks were able to tie it for a fourth time on a sacrifice fly by Ballinger in the ninth.
• That was not enough for the Jayhawks as the Red Raiders picked up the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Quintanar.

QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
"I thought we were fantastic offensively and competed at a really high level. We were only able to punch out two of their guys all day and that's a tough recipe to keep the other team off the board when you're not punching people out. We got some length from Dom, but they scored in each of the last five innings. We just could not get a zero. Proud of the offense for punching back. I loved the effort, I loved how he competed, loved the belief, but those are games we have to finish off." – Head Coach
Dan Fitzgerald
